Postgraduate Entrance Qualification Exams for USA and International Colleges

(GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, etc)

Here you will find details about the most common entrance tests to post graduate schools in the U.S.A. and Canada (also Australia for the LSAT). We give an outline of the tests and links to training materials and pre-test exams.

You should note that, unless you have completed your undergraduate degree in the U.S.A., Canada, the UK or Australia, you will be required to complete the TOEFL Exam for entry into a postgraduate school. MyPerfectResume.com

Graduate Records Exam (GRE)

In order to assess the widely varying levels of undergraduate degree education and to create a "more or less" level playing field for applicants, most graduate schools in the U.S.A. and Canada, and to a lesser extent in the UK, require applicants to pass multiple choice tests, administered by ETS in Princeton. The percentage weight, universities assign to these tests vary from school to school. But, on average, they make up 25% of the decision factors given to your total application submission. If your scores are low, they are likely to be given a much greater weight. The same applies if your scores are very high.

GRE - Test - Graduate Records Exam - The Standard Test for Postgraduate Entrance

The GRE General Test is accepted at more than 3,200 graduate and business schools as well as departments and divisions within these schools. Peterson and Kaplan offer on line tests (about $20.00) as well as test manuals for about $35.00 that will give you training and a good chance to score highly.

Graduate programs and business schools use GRE®nbsp; scores to evaluate your readiness for graduate-level work. The GRE General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing skills that are not related to any specific field of study.

  • Analytical Writing - Measures critical thinking and analytical writing skills, specifically the test taker's ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively
  • Verbal Reasoning -Measures reading comprehension skills and verbal and analogical reasoning skills, focusing on the test taker's ability to analyze and evaluate written material
  • Quantitative Reasoning - Measures problem-solving ability, focusing on basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis

There are three main providers of training and test manuals: Peterson, Kaplan and Barron's. They are all at the same level and to select the one you want, has more to do with, whether you like their layout, than with the quality of the training material. Peterson and Kaplan also offer, against payment, on line tests that you can use. If you have not been educated (high school and/or undergraduate) in the U.S.A. or Canada, these training materials are highly recommended, since they familiarize you with the types of tests you will come across, when you will be completing postgraduate courses.

The test consists of five-minute sections of multiple choice questions. Four of the five sections contribute to the test taker's score. These sections include

  • one analytical reasoning section, and
  • two logical reasoning sections.

The unscored section typically is used to pretest new test questions or to preequate new test forms. The placement of this section, which is commonly referred to as the variable section, varies for each administration of the test. The LSAT is scored on a scale from 120 to 180, with 180 being the highest possible score. A minute writing sample is administered at the end of the test. LSAC does not score the writing sample, but copies are sent to all law schools to which a candidate applies.

If you have not completed your undergraduate degree in the U.S.A., Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or at an English speaking University in South Africa, you will be required to take the TOEFL test.

The TOEFL test is the most widely accepted English-language test in the world. No matter where, in the USA and Canada, you want to study, the TOEFL test can help get you there. It is also a lot easier than the British equivalent, administered by the University of Cambridge.

More institutions accept TOEFL test scores than any other test scores in the world — more than 7,000 colleges, universities and licensing agencies in more than 130 countries.

There are two types of tests and you can apply to either of them.

Type of Test What the Test does Costs and other Information
TOEFL iBT
Internet-based Test (iBT)
The TOEFL iBT measures how well you read, listen, speak and write in English and use these skills together in the university classroom. For example, you might read a passage or listen to a lecture, and then write or speak about what you learned. From $150 to $250 depending on the country
TOEFL PBT
(Paper based Test)
The TOEFL (PBT) Paper-based Test (PBT) measures how well you read, listen and write in English. Writing skills are measured with the TWE® (Test of Written English), which everyone takes as part of the TOEFL PBT.

The TSE (Test of Spoken English) measures how well test takers speak in English and is available to anyone who needs scores for college admission or certification in a professional field. The test is used for employment, graduate assistantships, licensure, and certification purposes (nursing, medical etc).

Not available in every country. The costs depend on the country: $160 for the TOEFL PBT and $160 for the TSE

Here are some books that will help you prepare yourself for tests in general. The problem with many of these books is that they teach you how to learn something for a test, not for life or your professional career afterwards. These books have their use, but whether it is about real learning, is quite another question. You buy these directly from amazon.com

Books and Studyguides for Learning Strategies

This is only a very small selection of all the specialist books about learning strategies that you can get from amazon.com. They will ship your books anywhere, for a reasonable price.
