Postgraduate
Entrance Qualification Exams for USA and International
Colleges
(GRE,
GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, etc)
Here you
will find details about the most common entrance
tests to post graduate schools in the U.S.A. and Canada (also
Australia for the LSAT). We give an outline of the tests
and links to training materials and pre-test exams.
| You
should note that, unless you have
completed your undergraduate degree in the
U.S.A., Canada, the UK or Australia, you
will be required to complete the TOEFL
Exam for entry into a postgraduate school. |

Graduate
Records Exam (GRE)
In order
to assess the widely varying levels of undergraduate
degree education and to create a "more or less"
level playing field for applicants, most graduate schools
in the U.S.A. and Canada, and to a lesser extent in the
UK, require applicants to pass multiple choice tests,
administered by ETS in Princeton. The percentage weight,
universities assign to these tests vary from school to
school. But, on average, they make up 25% of the decision
factors given to your total application submission. If
your scores are low, they are likely to be given a much
greater weight. The same applies if your scores are very
high.

| The
GRE General Test is accepted at more than
3,200 graduate and business schools as
well as departments and divisions within
these schools. Peterson and
Kaplan offer on line tests
(about $20.00) as well as test
manuals for about $35.00 that
will give you training and a good chance
to score highly. Graduate
programs and business schools use GRE®
scores to evaluate your readiness for
graduate-level work. The GRE
General Test measures verbal reasoning,
quantitative reasoning, critical thinking
and analytical writing skills
that are not related to any specific
field of study.
- Analytical
Writing Measures
critical thinking and analytical
writing skills, specifically the
test taker's ability to
articulate complex ideas clearly
and effectively
- Verbal
Reasoning Measures
reading comprehension skills and
verbal and analogical reasoning
skills, focusing on the test
taker's ability to analyze and
evaluate written material
- Quantitative

analysis

There are three main providers of
training and test manuals: Peterson,
Kaplan and Barron's. They are all at the
same level and to select the one you want, has
more to do with, whether you like their layout,
than with the quality of the training material.
Peterson and Kaplan also offer, against payment,
on line tests that you can use. If you
have not been educated (high school
and/or undergraduate) in the U.S.A. or
Canada, these training materials are
highly recommended, since they familiarize you
with the types of tests you will come across,
when you will be completing postgraduate courses.

Graduate
Management Admission Test (GMAT)
If you
want to enter a business school, you have to take the
GMAT. It also has a verbal and mathematical part like the
GRE. Applicants to business schools come from different
countries, cultures, academic backgrounds, and levels of
work experience. Using the GMAT exam gives admissions
professionals a consistent, objective measure of skills
above these application variables. The GMAT exam is given
under standard conditions around the world, with the
highest level of security, to ensure that scores are
comparable across applicants.

Test
Training Manuals and CD-ROM's for the GMAT
There
are a number of publishers offering
training manuals for this test. Kaplan, Peterson
and Barron's are again amongst them. But there
are others as shown below. Training manuals which offer a
CD-ROM are preferable, since this is a computer based
tests and, unlike for the GRE, there is no longer a paper
based test.

through two full-length online tests, identify
your strengths and weaknesses, and focus your
study time exactly where you need it.Test
manuals for about $18.00 that will give

is a halfday, standardized test measuring
some of the skills considered essential
for success in law school. The reading
and comprehension of complex texts with accuracy
and insight, the organization and management of
information and the ability to draw reasonable
inferences from it, the ability to think
critically, and the analysis and evaluation of
the reasoning and arguments of others. The
test consists of five 35minute sections of
multiplechoice questions. Four of
the five sections contribute to the test taker's
score. These sections include
- one reading comprehension
section,
- one analytical reasoning
section, and
- two logical reasoning
sections.
The
unscored section typically is used to pretest new
test questions or to preequate new test forms.
The placement of this section, which is commonly
referred to as the variable section, varies for
each administration of the test. The LSAT is
scored on a scale from 120 to 180, with 180 being
the highest possible score. A 35minute
writing sample is administered at the end of the
test. LSAC does not score the writing sample, but
copies are sent to all law schools to which a
candidate applies.
(LSAT)
four times a year at designated centers
throughout the world.

Here are
some books that will help you prepare yourself for tests
in general. The problem with many of these books is that
they teach you how to learn something for a test, not for
life or your professional career afterwards. These books
have their use, but whether it is about real learning, is
quite another question. You buy these directly from
