(TOEFL, SAT, ACT, etc)
TOEFL, SAT and ACT Training Courses

Most of these tests are administred by the ETS, the Educational Testing Service, a non-profit organization, based in Princeton New Jersey. ETS maintains offices in the United States and around the world to fulfill their idea of advancing learning worldwide.

(Test of English as a Foreign Language)

The TOEFL® test is the most widely accepted English-language test in the world. No matter where, in the USA and Canada, you want to study as a foreign student, the TOEFL test can help get you there. It is also a lot easier than the British equivalent, administered by the University of Cambridge in the UK.

More institutions accept TOEFL test scores than any other test scores in the world more than 7,000 colleges, universities and licensing agencies in more than 130 countries.

There are two types of tests and you can apply to either of them.

Type of Test What the Test does Costs and other Information
Internet-based Test (iBT)
The TOEFL iBT measures how well you read, listen, speak and write in English and use these skills together in the university classroom. For example, you might read a passage or listen to a lecture, and then write or speak about what you learned. From $150 to $250 depending on the country
(Paper based Test)
The TOEFL (PBT) Paper-based Test (PBT) measures how well you read, listen and write in English. Writing skills are measured with the TWE® (Test of Written English), which everyone takes as part of the TOEFL PBT.

Measure Your Speaking Skills with the TSE® (Test of Spoken English)

The TSE (Test of Spoken English) measures how well test takers speak in English and is available to anyone who needs scores for college admission or certification in a professional field. The test is used for employment, graduate assistantships, licensure, and certification purposes (nursing, medical etc).

Not available in every country. The costs depend on the country: $160 for the TOEFL PBT and $160 for the TSE

You should note that the TSE Tests are in all places outside the USA and Canada only given four times a year. Generally the dates are sometimes in the middle of

  • August
  • October
  • January
  • March

What is the difference between TOEFL iBT and TOEFL PBT?

TOEFL iBT measures reading, listening, speaking and writing skills and takes approximately 4 hours. It is given on computer 30-40 times a year at test centers throughout the world.

TOEFL PBT measures listening, structure (grammar), reading and writing and takes approximately 3½ hours. It is given using paper and pencil 6 times a year at test centers where TOEFL iBT is not available.

Undergraduate College Entrance Tests

There are two major college entrance examinations administered in the United States today: the SAT and the ACT. Standardized tests like the SAT and ACT are designed to allow college admissions officers to judge all students by a common measurement.

(Scolastic Aptitude Test)

The SAT is the most widely taken college entrance examination. It is designed to test your skill level in math, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. The test is divided into seven sections: 3 math, 3 verbal, and 1 experimental section. The math and verbal sections each have their own distinct question types, including quantitative comparisons, sentence completions, grid-ins, and more.

The experimental section, used by the test developer to try out new questions, is not scored and can be either math or verbal. You will not know which section is experimental.

The SAT is scored on scale of 200-800 for both the math and verbal sections. The College Board sets the average for all test takers at 500 for each. A perfect score on the SAT is 1600. However, in recent years, fewer than 20% of all test takers achieved a math score of 600 or better. Fewer than 10% scored higher than 600 on the verbal section.

    (American College Test)

The American College Testing Assessment (ACT) is designed to test your skill levels in English, math, reading, and science reasoning. On the test, you will have 2 hours and 55 minutes to complete a variety of multiple choice questions divided into four sections - one for each tested subject area. The English, reading, and science sections each include several reading passages with anywhere from 5 to 15 questions per passage. The math section includes 60 questions - each with 5 possible answer choices.

You will actually receive 12 separate scores on the ACT: 1 composite, 4 subject scores, and 7 subscores. However the composite - or scaled - score is the most important. It ranges from 1-36. Nearly half of all test takers fall in the 17-23 range.

The personalized online ACT courses prepares you for test day with expert guidance that builds both skills and confidence in the areas where you most need help. Plus, it's stocked with essential subject-specific and general test-taking strategies. And the best part? Your ACT course is built just for you, based on the results of a pretest. The principles of the course are similar to those of the SAT shown above.

    SAT vs ACT

Until recently, the ACT was required by colleges in the Midwest, while the SAT was the test of choice for schools in the Northeast and on both coasts. Now, however, most schools accept both. This increased acceptance of both exams gives students a strategic advantage. The ACT is a content-based test, whereas the SAT tests critical thinking and problem solving skills. Depending on your particular strengths and weaknesses, you may perform significantly better on one test than the other. Regardless, you should check with each of your target schools before taking either exam.
